Methods of handling fleeces available to producers:
1. Fleeces entered in competition and placed for sale
2. Fleeces consigned for sale.
3. Fleeces entered in competition only.
The policy of the festival is to be a broker, to make fleeces available
to the spinners, and to provide a market for the producers. Producers are
responsible for the accuracy of their entry forms. The producers are urged
to be selective in the fleeces they enter and reasonable in the prices they
set. A percentage of the fleeces entered by each producer should be for
sale.
The sale price of the fleeces will be set by the producers. The MSBA
commission on all fleece sales will be 10% for MSBA members and 20% for
non-members.

Fleeces entered for competition, but not offered for sale, may not be
removed from the fleece barn prior to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, May 3. Unsold fleeces
must be removed by the producers Sunday, May 3, between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m.
Unclaimed fleeces become the property of MSBA. MSBA will not be responsible
for fleeces lost, stolen or erroneously sold.
Fleeces must be from the current (1997-98) wool crop and represent no
more than 15 months growth. Each fleece must be clean, free of chaff, burrs,
tags and second cuts. They must be skirted and tied with paper twine.

A maximum of seven (7) fleeces may be entered for competition and/or
sale. The same fleece may not be entered in more than one class. A maximum
of two fleeces per breed may be entered for competition in Division III.

Spinning Contests: Junior and Adult Novice
1998
Saturday ~ 2:30 pm ~ Pavilion
The Junior Spinning Contest is for anyone under the age of
18 who has attempted the art of spinning. Spinners will spin for 15 minutes.
Their yarn will than be skeined and entered in the category chosen by the
contestant. All skeins will be measured for Class 5 and judged for best
overall skein.
Premiums and ribbons will be awarded in the following categories:

The Adult Novice Spinning Contest was formed to give adults a
chance to show their talents. In order to be eligible for this contest,
one may not have more than 2 years of spinning experience. Spinners will
spin for 20 minutes, after which their skeins will be placed in the class
of the contestant's choice. All skeins will be judged for best overall skein.
Premiums and ribbons will be awarded for the following classes:
Class 1. Most even yarn (fine)
Class 2. Most even yarn (medium)
Class 3. Most even yarn (thick)
The premiums for each class are as follows:
1st - $13.00; 2nd - $9.00; 3rd - $7.00.
Best overall skein receives an extra $10.00.
Contestants in both competitions are asked to bring their own wheels;
carded wool will be provided. Contestants are also encouraged to bring a
2 yard niddy-noddy for skeining the finished yarn.

Fine Arts Competition - 1998
On display Saturday & Sunday ~ All Day ~ Building B
This art competition is sponsored by the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival
and is intended to encourage artists to participate in the Festival with
their entries featuring sheep or wool related subjects.
The competition is open to ALL artists. Medium used can be oil, pastel,
watercolor, acrylic, graphics, tapestry, sculpture, etc. Size limitation
is a maximum of 48 inches in any direction, including frame. All entries
must be suitably framed and equipped for hanging.
A Special 25th Anniversary Class: "What the Maryland Sheep
& Wool Festival Means to Me" is being offered this year to celebrate
this special accomplishment. We are encouraging all artists to participate
with their interpretation of this subject in any medium. Special awards
for this class are: 1st - $25.00; 2nd - $15.00; 3rd - $10.00.
Artists are eligible to enter three pieces of work, but no more than
two monetary prizes will be awarded to any one exhibitor. The Best of Show
prize can only be won for three consecutive years by the same exhibitor.
Awards offered (totaling $425.00): Best of Show - $100.00; Reserve -
$50.00.
1st - $20.00, 2nd - $15.00 and 3rd - $10.00 will also be offered in each
category.
The Festival gives the artist the opportunity to offer their competition
pieces for sale. The price, along with the artist's name, title of the art
work, and other pertinent information will be posted on the art work at
the conclusion of the judging. The Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival requests
a 10% commission on all sales. The purchaser can make checks payable to
the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival.
Entries are to be delivered Friday, May 1 between 1:00 and 4:00 pm. to
the Fine Arts Competition location on the Festival grounds. If you need
to mail in your entry, contact the Fine Arts Chairman. Please include return
postage. Judging will be at 5:00 pm. All work must remain throughout the
Festival and is to be removed Sunday, May 3 between 5:00 and 6:00 pm. Any
pieces not picked up become the property of the Maryland Sheep Breeders
Association. The Festival committee assumes no responsibility for damage
or loss of entries, but will make every effort to display and care for all
the art pieces entered.

Sheep Photo Contest - 1998

This photo contest is sponsored by the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival.
The contest is intended to encourage photographers to explore the challenge
and beauty of sheep and the versatility of wool and related products. All
photos must be related to these subjects.
This competition is open to ALL photographers. Minimum size of prints,
5" x 7". Entries are limited to two in each class.
Photos will be judged on composition and quality. All photos must be
mounted or framed and ready to hang with wire or hook.
Please write name, address and title of photo on the back of all photos.

Youth Poster Contest - 1998

Maryland Lamb & Wool Queen Contest
-1998
Friday ~ 7:00 pm ~ Show Ring
The 1998 Maryland Lamb and Wool Queen and Princesses will be chosen at
the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival. These young ladies will represent
the Maryland Sheep Breeders Association and help to promote sheep and wool
during the following year.
Qualifications:
1. Must be between the ages of 14 and 22 inclusive
2. Must be active in some area of sheep or wool production: purebreds,
commercial, 4-H or FFA project, spinning, etc.
Responsibilities:
1. Participate actively at the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival.
2. Assist at the Maryland Wool Pool (2 days in June)
3. Attend and help with the county fairs, Maryland State Fair, and
the Eastern National Livestock Show.
4. Assist with the Maryland State Fair's Lead Class.
5. Give a report of activities at the Maryland Sheep Breeders annual
banquet in October.
6. Promote Lamb and Wool in a variety of other ways: 4-H clubs, Ag
Week displays, etc.
7. Assist with the 1999 Maryland Lamb & Wool Queen Contest.
Criteria for Selection:
1. Poise and ease of contestant.
2. Apparent zest or stage presence of contestant.
3. Previous background and activities with sheep and wool.
4. Knowledge of the sheep and wool industry.
5. Public speaking ability.
Gifts will be awarded to all contestants. The Queen will receive a cash
award of $100. The Princesses will each receive a cash award of $25.

Maryland Grand Lamb Cook-Off - 1998
1997 Maryland Grand Lamb Cook-Off Winner:

Enter your favorite lamb recipe in the Fourteenth Annual Maryland Grand
Lamb Cook-Off.
Rules:
1. A minimum of 1 lb. of any cut of American lamb must be used.
2. All entries will be judged on taste (40 points), appearance (20
points), originality (20 points) and ease of preparation (20 points).
3. Prior to the Cook-Off, ten finalists will be selected from entries.
These ten finalists will be invited to prepare their recipes for the judges
at the Festival. Each finalist will be provided with an electric outlet,
table and access to a limited number of ovens. Contestants must furnish
their own grills, microwaves or other necessary cooking equipment, utensils
and serving materials to present their entries to the three judges.
4. No drinks to be served. There will be ice water available for
the judges.
5. Tablesetting for three judges.
6. Servings no more than one third actual portion per judge.
7. Entries must be postmarked no later than April 9, 1998.
Prizes:
All ten finalists will receive prizes provided by the Maryland Sheep Breeders
Association, Inc.
On the basis of the judges decision, prize money will be awarded as follows:
First Place - $150.00; Second Place - $125.00; Third Place -$100.00; Fourth
Place - $75.00; Fifth Place - $50.00.
How to Enter:
1. Type or print your recipe on an 8 1/2 x 11 inch sheet of paper. These
recipes will not be returned, may be reproduced for distribution, and become
the property of the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival.
2. List all ingredients in order used, no brand names.
3. Give complete recipe directions.
4. Please include your name, address, home phone, work phone and
name of your recipe.

Skein & Garment Competition - 1998
On display Saturday & Sunday ~ All Day~ Building B
RULES
1. A maximum of two entries per class will be accepted from each entrant
2. Each handspun article (garment or other item) must be spun and constructed
by the entrant alone. If a garment is not spun by the entrant it must be
entered in a commercial yarn division. Skeins spun from commercially prepared
fiber may only be entered in Divisions 8, 9 and 12.
3. Work must have been completed since the 1997 Festival.
4. All items must be clean.
5. All work must be at least 50% wool, wool being defined as produced from
the fleece of sheep; there are exceptions in the Handspun Skein Division,
where 100% wool is required.
6. Machine-knitted items may only be entered in Divisions 23-25, and 35-37.
7. There is an entry fee of $2.00 per skein or garment (article).
8. If you are mailing your entries, complete the entry form in this catalog.
Include one self- sticking address label for each item, with your name,
address and telephone number, so your article may be identified by viewers
after the judging. Attach a note to each article listing division name
and number; a brief description including fiber, intended use, technique,
and sheep breed if known. You must indicate if the item was commercially
prepared in any way. Indicate if the entrant is a junior, 18 or under.
If the yarn was spun from a Maryland sheep, or a sheep owned by a member
of the Maryland Sheep Breeders Association, indicate that and identify
the producer. DO NOT send hangers or display equipment. Note that mailed
items must be received no later than April 30, 1998.
9. If you are entering your items at the Festival, please bring self-sticking
address labels for each of your entries; include your telephone number
on the label. Tags will be provided for each item on which you will need
to write the following (or attach a pre-written note): the division name
and number; a brief description including fiber, intended use, technique
and sheep breed, if known. You must indicate if the item was commercially
prepared in any way. If the yarn was spun from a Maryland sheep, or a sheep
owned by a member of the Maryland Sheep Breeders Association, indicate
that and identify the producer. Also indicate if the entrant is a junior,
18 or under.
10. Each skein must contain a minimum of 2 ounces of handspun fiber for
thick and medium, 1 ounce for fine and _ ounce for super fine. Each skein
must be 1 _ to 2 yards in circumference, wound neatly and tied in at least
three places. Failure to do so will disqualify the skein.
11. Entries will be accepted Friday, May 1 between 12 and 3 p.m., or by
mail prior to the Festival (see #8 above). Mailed entries must include
entry fee. Make checks payable to: Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival.

12. Judging will take place Friday afternoon and evening, May 1. The
judges have the right to shift entries to more appropriate categories.
All entries will be on display during Festival hours under supervision
and will be released Sunday, May 3 between 4 and 5 p.m. Items will NOT

MSBA. The Festival will make every effort to display and care for the entered

Any yarn spun from a Maryland sheep or a sheep owned by a member of the
Maryland Sheep Breeders Association are eligible for the following prizes,
which are awarded to the sheep breeder:

THE FOURTH ANNUAL "FREDDIE" AWARD
A $100 cash award to the weaver of the most creative handwoven article
in the show. This award is funded by an endowment from the family and friends
of Mary Fredrika Pfeiffer, an avid Festival supporter. The "Freddie"
Award will continue her encouragement of excellence in creative handweaving.
MARYLAND MAKE-IT-YOURSELF-WITH-WOOL CONTEST PRIZE
Free registration ($15 value) to the 1998 Maryland Make-It-Yourself-With-Wool
Contest awarded to two Maryland residents under the age of 25, for the
most outstanding garment. Garments may be sewn of purchased, handloomed
or felted fabric, or may be knitted or crocheted. Eligible garments are:
a complete top (blouse, jacket, vest or sweater); bottom (skirt, skort,
pants); full jumper; suit; dress; or coat.

Handspun Skein Division - 100% Natural Colored Wool which demonstrates
even twist and good hand
(Super Fine is more than 30 wraps per inch, Fine is 20 or more, Medium

in any manner for use in one project displayed in a basket. Include a description
of the fiber techniques used to spin the yarn and its intended use. A pattern,
sketch or sample swatch of the project must be displayed. This class will
be judged on craftsmanship and creativity.

Junior Division
Participants must be 18 years old or younger. The Junior Division is composed
of Classes 1 through 51, using the same definitions as the adult divisions.
Ribbons and cash prizes are the same as the Adult Divisions.
Shepherd's Lead Contest
Sunday ~ 2:30 pm ~ Pavilion
1. Classes: Junior Class: ages 5-13, Senior Class: ages 14-19,
Adult Class: 20 years & over
2. Contestants must wear a 100% wool outfit.
3. Contestants must halter train a ewe lamb, yearling ewe, or a wether
lamb.
4. The sheep does not have to be owned by the competitor. It must
have at least two inches of fleece. The sheep will be judged on its fleece,
so wool should not be blocked, clipped or trimmed in any way, except for
the removal of dung tags.
5. The sheep may be colored or white, and need not be registered.
6. All sheep entered must be accompanied by a veterinary certification

7. Judging will be based on the following criteria:
Wool Outfit - 40 points
15 pts - handknit, crocheted, handwoven or sewn
15 pts - color, fit and style
5 pts - handspun
5 pts - handwork done by exhibitor
Sheep's Fleece - 30 points
15 pts - general appearance, clean fleece
10 pts - well defined crimp, evenness of fleece
5 pts - if sheep is owned by exhibitor
Poise and Control - 30 points
15 pts - poise of contestant
15 pts - control of the animal
Total - 100 points
8. Premiums in each class are as follows:
1st - $60.00; 2nd - $25.00; 3rd - $15.00; 4th - $10.00

Sheep Shearing Contest
Sunday ~ Noon ~ Stage outside Main Exhibition Hall
Rules:
1. There will be one division: Professional (sheared over 700 sheep
in a lifetime).
2. Each contestant will shear 3 sheep in a timed competition.
3. Judging Criteria:

4. Contestants must provide their own equipment.
5. Rake combs are not permitted.
6. Premiums totaling $400 will be awarded.
